Sony OLED TV Prototype

Sony OLED television comes in the form of the Sony XEL-1 OLED TV. Sony’s claim that the future of television lies with organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. At just 3mm thick the XEL-1 super thin and light. With the self illuminating ability of OLED TV, its contrast ratio of 1.000.000:1 and super smooth micro-second response times the viewing experience is unparalleled.

The Sony OLED television uses an OLED layer which produces light when an electric current is passed through it. Unlike LCD displays it requires no backlight, so without fluorescent lights used in LCDs it can be made incredibly thin. Also because the OLED pixels are individually controlled to produce light, they can produce super dark blacks and bright whites.

The lack of backlight and ability to control individual OLED pixels means that they are far more efficient than LCD displays and consume less energy. Also OLED screens don’t consume energy when they’re not in use, this means they can use much less electricity than LCDs. Coupled with the simplicity of the design that reduces the amount of components required, it makes them the eco-friendly option.
