Samsung OLED TV Moves a Step Closer

Posted on 28 September 2009

The Samsung OLED TV was proudly exhibited at the CES in January 2009. Since then Samsung has revised it expectations for OLED television saying it is not quite ready for production and for sale to the public yet.

OLED TV is hailed as the future of television but barriers will have to be overcome before the potential is realised. No television manufactures currently have commercially viable models available to the general public, but this will surely change as the major players develop OLED technology and perfect the production techniques and bring the costs down.

In March 2009 Samsung revealed that OLED technology still needed developing before making OLED television available for sale. This is in contrast to the Sony XEL-1 OLED television which went on sale back in late 2007. The Sony OLED TV is however considered a prototype rather than a mass production commercial set. The Sony XEL-1 LED TV is only produced in small quantities and measuring in at 11 inches with a cost of over $2000 is by no means a realistic option.

Samsung explained that the Samsung OLED TV has a few aspects relating to cost and manufacturing to be solved before the technology becomes a mainstream product.

That said, Samsung revealed 2 OLED panels, 14 inch and 31 inch models that are close to production and it would seem they only just round the corner from being available. More impressively displayed is Samsungs 40inch Full High Definition OLED TV prototype giving us a glimpse of what we can expect in the future.

And since these prototypes were revealed to the world, Samsung has also given us further encouragement by saying that they have made advances in their manufacturing techniques which will reduce the production costs and surely bring the Samsung OLED TV 1 or 2 steps closers to the grasps of the consumer.
