Next Generation OLED TVs

September 28th, 2009 by

The next generation of televisions are coming in the form of OLED TVs. Short for ‘organic light emitting diode’ televisions, the new OLED technology requires no back light and so can be super thin, they are eco-friendly and use less energy.

With Samsung, Sony, LG, Philips and Panasonic all investing heavily in the development OLED TVs and displays, surely they will eventually make the current LCD, LED and plasma televisions on the market a thing of the past.

Sony has already brought us the 11 inch XEL-1 OLED television, with a display that measures only 3mm thickness. It has a resolution of 940 x 540 and contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. It has a big brother, the 27 inch display measures 10mm in thickness and has a full HD resolution of 1920×1080.

Samsung has also shown us their 14.1-and 31-inch OLED TVs. Back in 2008 Samsung SDI exhibited a 40 inch OLED display that features a full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. The 14 and 13 inch Samsung models would seem to be close to production. Behind their 30-inch model lie the AM OLED panels produced by Samsung SDI.

LG has shown us their own 15-inch display, it has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and a resolution of 1366×768. If, as claimed at the IFA consumer electronics show, it goes on sale in late 2009 it will be the largest OLED television on the market, it is due to be available in Korea first.

Panasonic have invested heavily in the research of OLED TVs and have produced a small 20-inch prototype model with the aim of starting mass production of 40-inch OLED displays in 2011.

With all the major television manufacturers seeming committed to the development of OLED technology it would seem that we can’t be far away from seeing OLED TVs from hitting electronics stores across the world.
