Investment in OLED Technology

What is behind the OLED technology we are beginning to see break through into the consumer electronics markets? OLED (organic light emitting diode) TVs have a very high resolution, are very lightweight and are eco-friendly due to their energy efficiency and are destined to be the leader of the HDTV market

OLED technology is not yet readily available to the consumer because the desired reliability and cost cannot be achieved with the larger screen sizes that we are used to with LCD and plasma televisions. All major manufacturers are investing heavily in OLED technology with a view to making it available to the consumer.

Television technology is big business, its not only of interest to those of wanting to watch our favorite television broadcasts, but is integrated with DVD, Blu-Ray, gaming, internet, personal computing and other technologies such as IPTV.

The advantages of OLED displays that make them so attractive are plentiful. Firstly they are very thin and subsequently also very light in weight, they also retain some flexibility. Because of the thinness of the OLED layers that make up the display they are also brighter than LED and LCD displays.

The big advantage of OLED TVs is they do not require back or side lighting. The OLED produces the light itself, this is in contrast to LCD displays which are side or backlit and then block the light to varying degrees where it is not required on the display. This also has the benefit that the viewing angle is much greater with OLEDs. Because of this fundamental difference with LCD displays, OLED televisions and displays use much less power. OLED screens can also be made a lot bigger than LCD displays as they are largely plastic as opposed to the crystal and glass layers LCDs are made up of.

There are however some disadvantage to OLEDs which manufacturers are working to improve. Firstly they do not have as long a lifetime as LCDs have. Also they are currently expensive to produce. But with the investment being poured into OLED technology these problems will surely be overcome in near future.
