OLED Monitors – the Next Big Thing

Posted on 10 August 2009

Imagine a monitor with a display that is thinner, sharper, and doesn’t cost as much as the LCDs that most flat panel screens use today. OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) monitors are the next big thing in the market of displays and its affordability and crisp picture is what makes its future so bright. Presently LCD monitors are what many consumers feel to be the best that is available to purchase. But they are very expensive and their performance is only above average. OLED displays use electrical current which is sent through an organic material that emit light to produce the different colors that the monitor displays. A backlight is not necessary because the light is produced from the organic material.

In the near future, the first type of OLED display will be introduced. It will be Passive-matrix which means they won’t be too complex, but the price will be high and they will use more power than other types. They will be on small devices such as cellular phones and mp3 players. They are made up of a matrix of columns and rows of pixels. The organic material is located in between these columns and rows. A substrate can be found on the other side and it is the material used to give off the electric current.

Active matrix is the next type being developed and they utilize much less power than the passive matrix OLED. They are a lot like the passive matrix in design but they use a TFT back plate instead of columns and rows. There will be constant electrical current used in this model but it surprisingly uses less overall electricity than the passive matrix. There are even more types of OLED monitors that will be introduced in the future such as bendable screens and ones that you are able to see through. Whether you want to believe it or not, new technologies such as these are on the horizon.
