LED TV – The Benefits

LED TV’s back light technology has many benefits over the traditional LCD Full HD TVs that uses CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamps). These numerous advantages we speak of are:

  • LCD Blur Reduction

Full HD LCD TVs and displays have worse image blurring mainly because LCD pixels remain lit as opposed to a conventional CRT displays which strobes for a fraction of a second. LCD manufacturers reduce this motion blurring by improving the refresh rate up to 120 Hz. Each manufacturer has their own terminology like Motion Flow and Clear Frame and Clear Motion (from Sony, Toshiba and JVC respectively). The televisions video processor produces an interpolated (or an additional ‘in between’ image) frame in sequence with the original frames to attain 120Hz refresh rates and therefore reducing blur and improving the viewing experience.  The motion blur associated with LCDs can be improved through the use of LEDs for back lights rather than CCFLs.

  • Lower Power Consumption

LED backlight televisions have a less power consumption as compared to other original liquid crystal displays (LCD). LED manufacturers quote up to a 60% reduction in power consumption for light emitting diode based TVs when compared to the conventional mercury arc lamps (CCFL).

  • Environmental Benefits

The significant lower power requirements of LED ultimately help to reduce air pollution from carbon dioxide production.  LED TV has a longer lifespan compared to the traditional LCD television. The longer life span of LED television is 100k hours when compared to 20k for CCFL. The conventional CCFL backlight contains mercury creating a problems when disposing of them.

  • Improved Reliability

LEDs are what is called a solid state semi-conductor electrical component and have a longer life span of over 100k hours. Due to the fact that they are solid state devices, LEDs remain consistently effective for their lifespan which contrasts to CCFLs which become less effective over their lifespan – the light produced can decrease by up to 50%.

  • Improved Dynamic Contrast Ratio

Samsung utilizes multiple LED backlights to vary the backlighting over the LCD screens based on the image produced. The technique improves contrast, stronger black and whites and a greater range of graduation between them.
