What type of TV is the best – LCD, LED or Plasma? This is subjective and relative to your requirements. If money is no object then you might be prepared to pay $7000 for a Samsung 55” 9000 LED, however lets be a bit more realistic and narrow it down a bit, lets compare three 46 in HD TV sets, one of each LCD, LED and plasma all around the $1500 price bracket and see what you get for your money.
Panasonic TC-P46G25 46 inch Plasma TV – Priced at under $1300 this is the cheapest option, and the reverse of what you might expect, it wasn’t long ago that Plasmas were at the upper end of the price scale. This TV has a 1080p, 600hz, THX certified display which produces Full HD super smooth images with the high contrast levels that are characteristic of plasma TVs. This particular Panasonic 46 inch TV also comes with internet connectivity to stream internet content using Viera Cast, Skype capability, Viera image viewer for viewing still and motion digital images using an SD memory card slot and Viera Link which allows for the interconnection and control of compatible AV devices using a single Viera controller.
LG 46 inch 46LD550 LCD TV – Priced at $1400 this is the mid priced option. This full HD 1080p utilizes LG’s 120hz TruMotion technology with an 2.4ms response time, which in terms of LCD TVs will allow the viewer to watch sports and gaming high speed action with virtually no motion blur. This LG 46 inch TV also has a 150,000:1 contrast ratio which again for an LCD will produce great quality images in terms of reproducing the darkest blacks and brightest whites. Features again include internet connectivity (wirelessly) using NetCast to stream internet content.
Samsung 46 inch UN46C5000 LED TV – Priced at $1500, this is the most expensive option. It has a 1080p edge-lit LED display, the characteristics of which means that it has and improved colour gamut (range of colors), a dynamic contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 and a super slim design, when compared to a conventional LCD TV. However this particular model only utilizes 60hz technology. It does have internet connectivity (but not Skype). It is however the most energy efficient option due to using LED lighting rather than fluorescent lamps.
So I suppose having said this, the obvious question is which is the best 46 inch TV out of the three options? Well I suppose it depends on your intended application. If it is value for money then clearly the Panasonic wins. For watching movies and TV then the possibly superior colours of the Panasonic with its plasma display wins. If fast action gaming is your priority then the LG with its 120hz TruMotion and 2.4ms response time is your best option. If it’s a stylish and super slim design with energy efficiency you’re after then the Samsung comes out top.
